Cal South recognizes two of our NOCRA Referees, Matt Carstairs and Connor Duckworth

4 Youth Referees Selected As Heros Baghoumian Scholarship Fund Recipients
The Cal South Heros Baghoumian Scholarship was a fund established to honor the late State Youth Referee Administrator Heros Baghoumian, who passed away unexpectedly in December 2007. Four students who also worked as youth referees within Cal South - two high school students, male and female, and two college students, male and female - have been chosen to received stipends in Baghoumian's name: $250 for each of the high school students and $500 for each of the college students.

Matthew Carstairs of Hope Christian and Karina Cisneros of Upland were chosen as the high school student recipients, while Connor Duckworth of Cal Poly Pomona and Alexis Watkins of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo were chosen as the college recipients. The recipients and those not chosen for the stipends were all carefully considered after submitting applications for the scholarship.

"Heros was a referee that loved the game and loved to develop future referees," said Duckworth. "He saw potential in everyone and was a great pillar in Cal South. This scholarship will help me to continue my education at Cal Poly Pomona, and become a driving motivation to succeed on and off the field. Whether I'm competing in track and field for Cal Poly, reffing soccer, or studying for a tough exam, Heros would be proud to know that referees CAN make a difference!" Carstairs, who wishes to begin a career in firefighting, said "because of this scholarship I am able to pay for my tuition for my fire classes at Santa Ana College next year. It has also helped me understand the difficulties of applying, and how it is just one of the many challenges in life."

"Heros Baghoumian was truly a legend and I am forever grateful to have known him and to have served under his tutelage," said Alexis Watkins. "He was a unique individual, on and off the field, who taught me how to persevere in the face of adversity. I am fortunate to be able to work as a referee in San Luis Obispo while at college, and thus, continue to challenge myself academically and professionally. Refereeing the past several years and working with people like Heros, has taught me so much. The skills I learned, I bring forth from the pitch into my life every day."

Cal South congratulates all four referees on their awards, and wishes them luck in their future collegiate adventures.
