GAME MANAGEMENT

Picture
Let's start with some definitions:

management

1. the
act or manner of
handling, directing, or controlling: the management of players on the field
2.
to take charge or care of

manage
- to bring about or succeed in accomplishing, sometimes despite difficulty or hardship

[
1560s, probably from Italian maneggiare "to handle," especially "to control a horse"]

Game Management
The Laws of the Game are intended to provide that games should be played with as little interference as possible, and in this view it is the duty of referees to penalize only deliberate breaches of the Law.  Constant whistling for trifling and doubtful breaches produces bad feeling and loss of temper on the part of the players and spoils the pleasure of spectators.

Source: Advice to Referees

"... we have held close to the idea that the game is meant to be freely played, that is should be interrupted only when absolutely necessary. The fine art of refereeing is the art of knowing when to stop the game and when to let it go. It is the art of being able to recognize what is significant and what is not, what the players can accept and what they find intolerable."

"In youth and amateur soccer the game is for the players, for their enjoyment. The activities of the referee must ensure that the game is a pleasure for all the participants, that no one gets hurt, and that no single player or coach spoil the enjoyment for all the others."

  • Tell (Official Warning - Yellow Card),
  • Send off (Red Card) for failing to act in a responsible manner,
  • Suspend (notify Referee Coordinator or Board Member)
  • Abandon the Match (only if instructed or there is no other option)
